And he does it all with the protection of not only his own paid goons, but also the police and the politicians who are under his control. It’s enough to intimidate even the bravest, street-hardened cop…except, perhaps, for the small, secret crew of LAPD outsiders led by Sgt. Shot entirely in and around Los Angeles, including in many of the actual locations featured in the story, “Gangster Squad” is a colorful retelling of events surrounding the LAPD’s efforts to take back their nascent city from one of the most dangerous mafia bosses of all time. The screenplay is by Will Beall (TV’s “Castle”), based on the book Gangster Squad by Paul Lieberman. The film is produced by Dan Lin (“Sherlock Holmes”), Kevin McCormick (“The Lucky One”) and Michael Tadross (“Arthur”). The executive producers are Ruben Fleischer, Paul Lieberman and Bruce Berman.

Warner Bros. Pictures presents, in association with Village Roadshow Pictures, a Lin Pictures/Kevin McCormick production, “Gangster Squad.” The film will be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company, and in select territories by Village Roadshow Pictures.

The Marc Webb-directed summer tentpole also stars acclaimed Indian actor Irrfan Khan (Slumdog Millionaire) as Dr. Ratha, a close associate of Dr. Curt Connors aka The Lizard played by Rhys Ifans. As with most major Hollywood releases here, Spider-Man will also be dubbed in various regional languages.

“Each of the Spider-Man franchise films has broken records on its release in this territory. We are very confident that Indian audiences will enjoy the new reboot of the franchise even more because they are watching it before the U.S. and also, as this film has an India connect,” said Sony Pictures India MD Kercy Daruwala. In 2007, Spider-Man 3 grossed Rupees 680 million ($13.6 million), which at the time, made it the highest grossing Hollywood film here according to Sony Pictures India, until that record was broken by Avatar which grossed over $22 million in 2009.

Sony’s summer lineup kicks off with the May 25 worldwide opening of Men In Black 3 followed by Amazing Spider-Man leading up to the August 3 worldwide release of the Total Recall reboot starring Colin Farrell, Kate Beckinsale and Jessica Biel.

Sony’s other big release of the year, the 23rd instalment of the James Bond franchise, Skyfall, will open in India on Nov. 2, a week ahead of its U.S. release date. The previous James Bond outing, Quantum of Solace, also opened in India a week ahead of its U.S. release date in November 2008.

The studio has tapped Star Trek and Transformers writing team Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci to work the screenplay for The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

Spider-Man, which reboots the franchise under the direction of Marc Webb and actor Andrew Garfield, has a screenplay written by Alvin Sargent, Steve Kloves and James Vanderbilt.

Vanderbilt already penned a draft of the sequel but is now working on White House Down, the action movie that is a high priority for the studio.

Bringing in the duo highlights the premium importance the studio is putting on the sequel. The hiring of the high-profile writers is not cheap, and it shows that Sony does not want to lose any momentum on the project.

The studio has set a May 2, 2014, release date and wants to be in production in the first quarter of 2013.

“Alex and Bob have a unique ability to write great character and spectacular action that makes them pitch perfect for Spider-Man,” said Matt Tolmach, who is producing with Avi Arad.

Added Arad, “They have an innate understanding of what makes Peter Parker not just a superhero, but a hero for all of us.”

The duo, who are repped by CAA, said they grew up as Spider-Man fans and excitedly compared getting this gig to being handed the Holy Grail.

The filmmaker Jason Reitman, who is organizing this Live Read event to be held on Friday at the TimesCenter in Manhattan, said on Wednesday that Mr. Rudd, a star of comedies like “Role Models,” “Knocked Up” and “I Love You, Man,” will play C. C. Baxter, the “Apartment” protagonist who lends his home to co-workers for their after-hours trysts. Ms. Stone, whose films include “The Help,” will play Fran Kubelik, an elevator operator with whom Baxter falls in love, helping him find a new outlook on life.

Mr. Reitman previously announced on his Twitter feed that James Woods will play the role of Baxter’s boss, Sheldrake (portrayed in the original film by Fred MacMurray); Tom Cavanagh (“Ed”) will succeed Ray Walston as Dobisch; and Cara Buono (“Mad Men”) will take over from Edie Adams as Sheldrake’s secretary, Miss Olsen. David Wain, who directed Mr. Rudd in his films “Role Models,” “Wanderlust,” “The Ten” and “Wet Hot American Summer,” will play Baxter’s neighbor Dr. Dreyfuss, portrayed in the film by Jack Kruschen. The cast also includes Jason Sudeikis (“Saturday Night Live”) and Lena Dunham (“Girls”).

The Academy Award-winning screenplay for “The Apartment” was written by Mr. Wilder and I. A. L. Diamond; the film also won Oscars for best film and best director (Mr. Wilder) and earned nominations for the performances of Mr. Lemmon, Ms. MacLaine and Mr. Kruschen.

Affleck’s Argo is, like Gangster Squad, a fact-based project. This project focuses on a covert operation to rescue a group of Americans during the 1979 Iran hostage crisis. Six of the 52 Americans taken hostage during Iran’s revolution managed to find refuge at the home of the Canadian ambassador. Affleck stars in the film as well. Alan Arkin, Bryan Cranston and John Goodman are also featured in the cast.

Kellogg’s has teamed with Sony for a special marketing campaign tied with the upcoming release of the 3D reboot. Android users will need to download Kellogg’s Amazing Spider-Man Exclusive App and then they can scan codes on specially marked boxes of Kellogg’s brand cereals to access the three new clips.

Of course, the clips have made their way to the Internet already. And although a little grainy, the videos reveal three scenes from Marc Webb’s upcoming superhero pic.

In the first, Peter Parker (Garfield) seems to be sleeping on the subway when he is abruptly awoken and leaps onto the ceiling. It would seem that such a strange scene must be in a dream for Parker to get away with such a leap on a crowded subway without his Spider-Man mask.

In the second, Spider-Man shows off his sense of humor while beating up a bad guy. A slightly more light-hearted version of Parker fakes a sneeze while releasing his webs to catch the guy who is up to no good.

In the final brief scene, Parker has to deal with the challenges of everyday life that can come with being a superhero. Even brushing your teeth can be difficult, it seems.

The Amazing Spider-Man is set to debut July 3. It also stars Emma Stone, Denis Leary, Rhys Ifans, Martin Sheen and Sally Field. The film centers around a teenage Peter Parker, who attends Midtown High School, and has his eye on a classmate, Gwen Stacy (Stone).

“Emma and I will kick off the event and welcome everybody, then we’ll participate,” Wilde said of her duties, which includes pounding the pavement with thousands of participants.

Wilde says she may run alongside Stone, but only for a short time.

“Maybe Emma will run in the front, and I’ll bring up the rear,” Wilde joked. “I probably will have such shin splints after attempting to run I will be recovering on ice.”

The EIF Revlon Run/Walk is one of the nation’s largest single-day fundraisers. Each year, tens of thousands participate in its New York and Los Angeles event. The company has distributed more than $65 million to date for research projects.

Wilde says she’s proud to participate because cancer has affected several women in her life and she’s eager to help find a cure. She feels the best chance comes from the private sector.

“I’m optimistic that in my lifetime we will find one. Or certainly in the same way that’s happened with HIV in the last 30 years where treatment has gotten to a much better place. But that can only happen if there’s money behind research and that doesn’t just happen magically,” Wilde said.

She added: “It’s incredibly important to view the influence that multinational companies like Revlon have for the greater good.”

The Revlon Run/Walk comes to Los Angeles on May 12, where six-time host Halle Berry takes to the streets to help find a cure.

The highly-anticipated footage played in 13 cities, including Mexico City, Berlin, Moscow and Seoul. Director Marc Webb joined the Los Angeles crowd, Emma Stone and producers Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach showed up in Rio de Janeiro, Rhys Ifans in London and Andrew Garfield in New York. Hundreds of fans showed up at the AMC Century City hours before the presentation with the line stretching from the upper to lower levels and around the block. A second presentation was even added to aid in satiating the demand.

The event cannily saw Sony Pictures’ unveling of the new Spidey trailer quickly hijack Monday’s “post-Super Bowl best commercials” debate by blowing away attendees with the preview’s slick footage.

The 3D trailer more than delivers and ditto for the extended scenes which were shown in 2D. Though some of the material had already been screened for fans during last year’s Comic-Con Convention in San Diego, there were a couple of shots still in the animatic stage. The brand new footage reveals some of Dr. Curtis Connors’ evolution into classic Spider-Man villain the Lizard, as well Peter Parker’s hand in creating the amphibious freak.

One of the other standout scenes played was a “Spidey vs. the NYPD manhunt,” led by Captain Stacy (Denis Leary), father of love interest Gwen Stacy (Stone). During one of the scene’s pivotal moments, Captain Stacy even unmasks our hero (But we won’t tell you what happens after).

What is most amazing about the footage is despite how “big” it plays, the scenes still manage to remain deeply intimate and personal. Sami Raimi’s Spidey scenes actually pale in comparison with a faker, quainter feel. In the preview, the relationships between Parker and his family, Gwen Stacy, her father Captain Stacy as well as the Connors, all show multi-facets of the teen character. Garfield’s version of Peter Parker not only plays the bullied teen-turned-powerful superhero side of the character, but also the side of an orphan striking emotional chords over a desire to connect to his missing father.

In between viewings of the trailer and sizzle reel, Webb said one of the main focuses in the new Spidey movie was to explore Parker’s life in the context of being an orphan. “I wanted to treat Peter Parker in a more naturalistic way,” he said.

Speaking from Rio, Stone explained how her character Mary Jane would differ from that of Kirsten Dunst’s portrayal in the Raimi movies. “Gwen is the yin to Mary Jane’s yang,” she said. “Gwen is falling in love with Peter Parker and Mary Jane falls in love with Spider-Man, which I think is different.”

Sony nailed the casting of Parker/Spidey with Andrew Garfield, who came off both nervous and extremely humble, “I can’t believe I’m here,” he told the excited geek crowd.

The character “belongs to everyone in this room,” Garfield said from the New York event. “It doesn’t belong to me. I really mean it. The more of these events I go to the more I realize…It’s overwhelming to be representing this symbol. ‘Cuz that’s all I am. I’m the guy in the suit. It could be anyone in the suit. It happen to be me this time, before that it was Tobey [Maguire] and next time hopefully it will be a half hispanic-half african-merican actor.”

Garfield’s last sentiments — a nod to the debut of last year’s Ultimate Spider-Man comic book series, featuring a mixed-raced character Mile Morales — elicited cheers and laughter from Rio, London, New York and LA.

Answering a canned question from a fan on the Internet, Webb said he was eager to take on the Spider-Man reboot because of the elements Spidey that have yet to be film. He listed the “Gwen Stacy saga” as a crucial component of his work on the franchise as well as the presence of the Lizard (“One of my all-time favorite villains”) and the opportunity to depict “the emotional consequences of being an orphan.” Indeed, the footage we saw dealt explicitly with Peter Parker’s late father, and how his life has impacted the young hero. Webb also said that The Amazing Spider-Man presents a “more realistic, more naturalistic Peter Parker,” which we can confirm is absolutely true based on the material presented.

“How is Gwen Stacy different from Mary Jane Watson?” was the question put to Emma Stone, who described the characters as “polar opposites.” For one thing, Gwen is a Valedictorian and comes from an affluent, close-knit family, Stone explained, while Mary Jane came from humble circumstances and did not enjoy a good relationship with her father. Also, Stone said, “Gwen falls in love with Peter Parker, while I think Mary Jane fell in love with Spider-Man.”

Rhys Ifans said that “unlike other comic book villains,” the baddies of Spider-Man’s world are “human, real and flawed.” He explained that Dr. Connors aka the Lizard was a friend of Peter’s late father, which makes for a “complex and emotional relationship” with Peter/Spider-Man.

Asked why he took the part of Spider-Man, Andrew Garfield deadpanned, “Because I’m not an idiot.” The actor said “Everyone wants to be Spider-Man. Spider-Man belongs to everybody, not just to me. I’m just the guy in the suit.” Garfield said he’s just one piece of a lineage that includes former Spider-Man actor Tobey Maguire and, “Hopefully, next time it will be a half-Hispanic, half-African American actor,” a remark which drew applause from the Miles Morales fans assembled around the world.

As for the footage, we were presented with the new trailer for The Amazing Spider-Man that will be made available online a little later, as well as a sizzle reel which assembled some additional moments from the film. Skeptical viewers of the initial trailer will likely be won over by quite a lot of the material in the new version, which presents a Spider-Man with far more attitude, humor and charm than we’ve seen in other films. In one memorable sequence, we see Spidey berate a would-be car thief for thinking he was a cop despite the fact that he’s wearing a skintight red and blue costume. In the sizzle reel, Spider-Man executes what can only be described as epic spider trolling on this hapless crook. I suspect that this scene will be thought of as revelatory for Spidey fans, as the moment where the comic book hero, who’s famous for his endearingly obnoxious sense of humor, finally came to life in cinema.

The footage contained some action bits and web-swinging that is more or less inline with what we’ve come to expect from Spider-Man films, but perhaps with a more realistic aesthetic than that employed by Sam Rami in his earlier trilogy. There’s certainly loads of super-science stuff going on in this film, and it seems that fans will be treated to an in-depth sequence that documents the development of Spider-Man’s web-shooters.

Most impressive was a scene in which a distinctly Romita-esque Emma Stone joins Andrew Garfield for some authentically awkward “will-you-go-out-with-me” exchanges in the halls of their high school. It was utterly natural and extremely cute. Uncle Ben is present for some of it, and violates Bro Code in a manner most egregious and one that I suspect must play some role in his eventual death (which may or may not occur in this film, I don’t really know).

1. Emma Stone isn’t Kirsten Dunst, got it? If you’re looking for Stone’s blond Gwen Stacy character to be anything like Dunst’s Mary Jane, forget it. “I keep saying Gwen is the yin to Mary Jane’s yang,” she told fans via live linkup in Rio De Janiero. “They’re polar opposites in every way…Gwen falls in love with Peter Parker, Mary Jane falls in love with Spider-Man.”

2. Think Spider-Man meets The Dark Knight: Look for darker, more sarcastic humor, a more antagonistic relationship with law enforcement, and more of a self-made hero. And in this version, Parker gets some of his web-slinging studliness from his own talent for invention—as it was in the original comic books. “We wanted to treat Peter Parker in a more realistic way,” director Mark Webb told fans from Los Angeles.

3. Or think Spider-Man meets The Dark Knight meets…Star Wars? No, the Lizard is not Spidey’s Dad (we hope), but there are a lot of daddy issues wrapped around the hero-villain dynamic. Dr. Curt Connors, aka the Lizard, the villain at the center of the tale, holds the key to Peter Parker’s questions about a mysterious past. “With Dr. Curt Connors, what makes him a more emotional presence in Peter’s life is that he had a very close relationship to Peter’s father,” said Rhys Ifans, who plays the villain and who was speaking to fans from London. “That makes the connection a very complex and emotional one.”

4. The new Spider-Man is totally scared. “I’m terrified right now,” Andrew Garfield admitted while speaking to fans from New York. “It’s so overwhelming to be representing this symbol … but it’s a reverent terror.” As for why he took the role, knowing the great responsibility that comes with it, he quipped, “I’m not an idiot.”

5. The next Spider-Man will be… Garfield imagines Spider-Man evolving in a very interesting way in the future. “Hopefully next time he’ll be a half-Hispanic, half African-American actor,” he told fans.

Laura Ziskin, Avi Arad, and Matt Tolmach are producing the film in association with Marvel Entertainment for Columbia Pictures, which will open in theaters everywhere in 3D on July 3, 2012.

The Amazing Spider-Man is the story of Peter Parker (Garfield), an outcast high schooler who was abandoned by his parents as a boy, leaving him to be raised by his Uncle Ben (Sheen) and Aunt May (Field). Like most teenagers, Peter is trying to figure out who he is and how he got to be the person he is today. Peter is also finding his way with his first high school crush, Gwen Stacy (Stone), and together, they struggle with love, commitment, and secrets. As Peter discovers a mysterious briefcase that belonged to his father, he begins a quest to understand his parents’ disappearance — leading him directly to Oscorp and the lab of Dr. Curt Connors (Ifans), his father’s former partner. As Spider-Man is set on a collision course with Connors’ alter-ego, The Lizard, Peter will make life-altering choices to use his powers and shape his destiny to become a hero.

We can’t blame Jim Carrey for his creepy proclamations of love for Emma Stone. With her disarming smile and raspy voice, the fiery redhead inspires that kind of devotion in a lot of men. In Crazy, Stupid, Love, Stone played a girl so completely perfect that she drove a career playboy to give up the game. The role really wasn’t much of a stretch. When she’s not causing men twice her age to record video testimonials or players to rethink their life plan, the star of the Oscar-nominated The Help is impressing us with her comedic timing and laid-back attitude. So, yeah, Jim, we like her, too.

The film starring Viola Davis and Golden Globe winner Octavia Spencer will compete for Outstanding Motion Picture against seven-time nominee “Pariah,” Eddie Murphy’s comedy “Tower Heist,” “Jumping The Broom” and “The First Grader.”

“The Help” stars Viola Davis and Emma Stone will go head-to-head for the title of Outstanding Actress in a Motion Picture, while co-stars Bryce Dallas Howard, Spencer and Cicely Tyson are nominated in the Outstanding Supporting Actress field, alongside “Pariah’s’ Kim Wayans and “Bridesmaids” comedienne Maya Rudolph.

Big congrats to Emma and there’s still some awards for her films to be announced.

In the Jan. 26 episode of the NBC comedy, Jenna (Jane Krakowski) stars in “a movie from the producers of Valentine’s Day and New Year’s Eve called Martin Luther King Day,” says Fey. “I want to lay claim to that bit before anyone gets it. It’s a movie that has everyone in the world in it.” That includes the aforementioned actors from The Help, Saturday Night Live, and Up All Night, who will be seen in a trailer for the faux film.

30 Rock, which kicks off its sixth season Thursday at 8 p.m., will also feature such guest stars as James Marsden, Mary Steenburgen, Will Arnett, Denise Richards, Kelsey Grammer, and Kristen Schaal.

Stone had been interested in the script since last summer. It’s a two-hander about a nerdy guy and his wild older sister who travel to Miami to try and sell a million-dollar stash of ’70s cocaine they found in the trunk of their late father’s car. It’s the third recent sale for Diliberti, who sold the pitch The Big Sayonara to Fox as a potential directing vehicle for John Requa and Glenn Ficarra, and an untitled pitch that Warner Bros bought for Todd Phillips to produce. Both Stone and Diliberti are repped by WME; Stone’s managed by Anonymous Content and Diliberti by New School Media.

Stone, 22, appeared in three feature films in 2011 and has an even bigger gig on the horizon for 2012. But what’s been refreshing about Stone’s career boom is where we don’t see her: peering out from mug shots on tabloid covers or denying the latest round of rumors that she is or is not (insert gossipy condition of your choice here).

When Stone made news off-screen, it was for things like saying that she doesn’t do nude scenes because her father would kill her. It’s a refreshing attitude, one that serves her on-screen and off.

The Scottsdale native and Valley Youth Theatre alum had a scene-stealing small-but-hilarious role in “Friends With Benefits,” heated things up with man-of-the-moment Ryan Gosling in “Crazy, Stupid, Love” and proved she knew her way around a drama in “The Help,” one of the most successful movies of the year. Each performance helped further a career that began with good notices in “Superbad” and includes a Golden Globe nomination for 2010′s “Easy A.”

(She was great during the television broadcast of the awards show early this year as well.)

Next year Stone stars in her biggest role yet — as Gwen Stacy in “The Amazing Spider-Man.” It’s the kind of job that, box-office returns willing, should lead to a franchise.

Along with the upcoming “Movie 43″ and “Gangster Squad” also on tap, there’s no reason to think 2012 won’t be a big year for Stone as well. Movie careers are tricky things, of course, and there’s no future in trying to predict them.

Better to enjoy what Stone has accomplished in 2011, then, the year she solidified her status as one of the biggest breakout stars the Valley has seen, with a lot of optimism for the future.

The comedy focuses on a social media savvy girl who is pessimistic about love and vets her friends’ dates to find flaws. When that process leads her to uncover the perfect guy, she decides to use her internet research skills to turn herself into his perfect match. The film will be produced by Gary Sanchez’s McKay and Will Ferrell. The Gary Sanchez team helped her hone the script and gave her notes to help shape it.

The script wasn’t even supposed to be shopped. It was sent by Gary Sanchez directly to Stone, in hopes she would become attached. Then it leaked and got passed around the development community. Suddenly, Fox 2000 was among four studios making bids, and Gary Sanchez and Kahn’s WME reps had an auction. Fox 2000′s Elizabeth Gabler and Rodney Ferrell were most aggressive, but the sellers wanted to wait a day so that two other studios could get in the mix. When Fox 2000 upped the ante–a seven-figure offer with a 90-minute expiration–they took the deal. Kahn had gotten some seasoning at Gary Sanchez, writing, performing and directing numerous shorts for their Funny Or Die website. Kahn also just made an untitled NBC pilot deal for a Gary Sanchez.

Stone wrapped The Amazing Spider-Man and is shooting Gangster Squad with her Zombieland director Ruben Fleischer. She doesn’t have her next movie, so it is possible this film could find its way into production very quickly (there will surely be a title change). I’ve covered this business long enough to recall the heyday of the big spec script deals of the 1990s, when struggling writers became wealthy overnight, like Jeff Maguire, whose electricity was getting turned off when he scored a huge spec payday for In the Line of Fire. Studios don’t pay those big bucks much anymore, and it has been a long while since I’ve heard a rags to riches writer story this good.

He’s Fuckin’ Perfect becomes another priority project for Gary Sanchez, whose Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters with Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton will be released March 2 by Paramount. They are about to start production on the Jay Roach-directed comedy Dogfight at Warner Bros with Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis. Their Spanish language comedy Casa De Mi Padre was just acquired by Pantelion Films, and writer/director Leslye Headland just wrapped the Kirsten Dunst-Isla Fisher comedy Bachelorette.

WME reps both Stone and Kahn, and Stone is managed by Anonymous Content.
