When The Help, the highly anticipated adaptation of the 2009 best-seller about African-American maids and their employers in 1960’s Jackson, Miss., hits screens on August 10, it will represent a huge victory for the power of friendship — namely that between author Katherine Stockett and her childhood best friend, director Tate Taylor. “We were just these oddballs in Jackson,” Taylor says in EW’s cover story. “Latchkey kids, neither accepted in the Junior League set for various scandalous reasons. We knew the sun didn’t rise and fall over Mississippi.” Years later, after finishing the book, Stockett handed over the movie rights to her pal, whose one feature film, 2008’s Pretty Ugly People, made $7,000 at the box office. After the book was published — and catapulted onto bestseller lists (where it still remains today) — she faced enormous pressure to go with a bigger name. But she stood behind Taylor and his determination to adapt and direct the movie. “Once I made that decision it was such a relief,” says Stockett, “and I told everybody else to f— off.”

Four years after Spider-Man 3, starring Tobey Maguire, The Amazing Spider-Man promises to be a “more contemporary,” “more gritty,” and “more character-driven” look at the comic book hero. He’s a hero the 27-year-old Garfield knows well. Growing up, “I related to Peter Parker [Spidey’s alter ego] so much because I felt like someone else inside,” he says. “I loved the comic books and the animated TV series and I even dressed up as Spider-Man as a kid.”

Adds Webb: “Ultimately what this movie is about is a kid who grows up looking for his father and finds himself. And that’s a Spider-Man story we haven’t seen before.”

Hollywood Is Her Oyster
The “Aren’t you the girl from Easy A?” days are over. Emma Stone is Hollywood’s summer sensation as she hits the screen in three big movies—The Help; Crazy, Stupid, Love; Friends with Benefits— not to mention next year’s Spider-Man film. But is there another 22-year-old actress so focused on staying fully clothed? Hanging out with Alexandra Wolfe, Stone shares her oyster-mania, her rock-bottom moment, and her strategy for avoiding the sexy trap.

Emma Stone was running down a dark, eerie hallway covered with cobwebs and stuffed buffalo heads while wearing a white Venetian mask. Hollywood’s hottest up-and-coming ingénue was not filming a movie scene but spending a Saturday night on West 27th Street in New York’s old McKittrick Hotel at a show called Sleep No More, an alternative-theater production loosely based on Shakespeare’s Macbeth that involves putting on a mask and following actors from room to room as they pantomime scenes from the Scottish Play. Along with the rest of the crowd—which that Saturday night in late May included Emily Blunt, John Krasinski, and Matt Damon—the wide-eyed actress followed a slew of half-nude, blood-spattered actors rifling through coffins and gyrating with androgynous forms atop aging pool tables.

Against the backdrop of pickled bones, scattered teeth, and detective photos of mangled corpses, even with her mask on, Stone, 22, stood out almost as much as she does in Hollywood. Unlike other actresses her age, she was fully clothed, wearing a long-sleeved nautical-striped T-shirt, skinny jeans, and black patent-leather flats. That night, standing in front of the naked chimera dancing in the strobe lights, Stone looked like Goldilocks stranded in a Stanley Kubrick movie.

Which is not to say she was afraid. Gazing at Stone’s fresh porcelain face, gaping green eyes, recently re-dyed red hair (after having gone back to her natural blond for Spider-Man), and willowy physique, I was struck by the impulse to shield her from the blood-spewing beasts and the sight of Lady Macbeth’s dying baby, but soon she was bounding down another passageway, toward another violent fight scene, and I was the one hiding behind her.

Doesn’t Emma look amazing on the cover???

“I micro-manage,” Emma Stone tells Vanity Fair writer Alexandra Wolfe. “I think I’m a Type A personality who’s trying to convince herself she’s Type B,” the actress says, admitting that she still lays out her clothes and sets her coffee-maker for the morning the night before. Stone, who confesses she was nervous for her V.F. bikini cover shot, saying, “I usually wear a one-piece,” jokes that her only vices are sugar, wine, and black-tar heroin. “That’s pretty much it, the heroin, the sugar, and the wine—nothing too crazy.”

“Sometimes people recognize me,” Stone says of her public profile, “but they’re more like, ‘Oh, hey!’” As Stone’s star rises, however—the actress will appear in The Help, Friends with Benefits, and Crazy, Stupid, Love this summer—so does the presence of the paparazzi. “He stands up while I’m walking to my car and is like, ‘Hey, Emma! Listen, I’m going to delete these pics. Here’s my card,” Stone recalls of a recent encounter with a paparazzo. “‘If you ever go to the beach with your friends or walk out of your house in your pajamas, call me.’” Stone, confused, refused his card. “He’s like, ‘But I’m deleting these pictures, see?’ … These guys try to strike up a deal with you so you feel like they’re your friend. I didn’t even know that was a thing—that people would call them.”

Stone, who rarely tweets and shut off her Facebook account after she “got addicted to FarmVille,” admits to Wolfe that she is still grappling with certain aspects of being in the public eye—dating, for one. “Talking about this stuff is pretty new,” Stone, who won’t say if she is single or not, says of being asked by the press about her personal life. The actress concludes that “the only solution I’ve come to when it comes to things like that—the health of my family or dating, really personal things—is not to talk about it.”

As for the pressure in Hollywood to stay thin, while Stone allows that “I’m definitely more conscious of it as I’ve gotten older,” she says that she has not succumbed to extreme celebrity fad diets. “That diet, have you seen it?” Stone asks of the popular trainer to the stars Tracy Anderson’s recommended diet. “It’s like: Eat this diet, which is a palm-size piece of chicken and some beans, and work out two hours a day for the rest of your life.” The actress, who rock-climbs at Chelsea Piers in New York City, even admits that weight training and Pilates with Spider-Man co-star Andrew Garfield “brings out anger in me.”

Before her breakout role in Superbad, Stone had dropped out of high school and moved to Los Angeles to pursue her dream of acting, enrolling in online classes and working part-time at a dog bakery. “I think three people called my specific cookies inedible to their dogs,” Stone said with a laugh. “I’m not a super-talented dog baker.” Stone, however, insists she has no regrets. “I did Superbad in what would’ve been my senior year,” she says. “I was playing a senior, and had I graduated I would’ve missed that opportunity, and had I missed that opportunity I wouldn’t be here right now.”

Stone tells Wolfe that she still remembers what she considers her hardest Hollywood moment, an audition for NBC’s Heroes. “I could hear that, in the other room, a girl had just gone in and they were saying, ‘You are our pick … On a scale of 1 to 10 you’re an 11,’” Stone recalls, before Hayden Panettiere—who ended up with the role of Claire Bennet—walked out of the room. “I went home and just had this meltdown,” Stone says, calling the experience “rock bottom.”

At 22, the Easy A star is already being called the new face to watch. With that label also comes the pressure of staying thin in Hollywood. “I’d be crazy to sit here and tell you that I’ve never thought about it,” Stone, who can next be seen in this summer’s Crazy, Stupid, Love, told Glamour. “[But] I never can beat myself up about it … You’re a human being, you live once and life is wonderful, so eat the damn red velvet cupcake.”

Our October issue features all of our favorite “It” girls, and who better to represent this crop of bright young things than Emma Stone? She’s already proven her comedic chops with hits like Superbad and Zombieland, and now she’s continuing her funny streak this fall with Easy A, the whip-smart modern take on The Scarlett Letter.

We shot Emma in Mississippi, where she was taking a break from comedy to film the ’60s drama, The Help.

On being featured on the “World’s Sexiest Women” lists:
“That’s just ridiculous…Now that you’ve hung out with me a few times you know how ridiculous that is. All my friends and family are like, ‘That is the funniest thing I have ever seen.’ ”

How it feels to be a movie star:
“I haven’t really examined that too much on my own yet. I think if I thought about that I’d have a full-blown panic attack and not be able to do my job at all. ”

On her parents letting her move to LA at a young age:
“I’ve become more appreciative as I get older that they said it was OK, and they didn’t let me become some crazy, emancipated nutter. That was not me saying emancipated people are insane.”

Why she likes being funny:
“I think my ultimate goal at the end of the day is to make my parents laugh. Maybe that is what this is all about: a roundabout way of trying of trying to entertain my parents, just like I did in the living room when I was a kid.”

Or, as Olive says in her Gen Facebook jargon, “If Google Earth were a guy, he couldn’t find me if I was dressed up as a 10-story building.”

But all it takes is one little white lie about sleeping with a community-college boy and, as quick as you can text “OMG,” she has been declared the school slut — which she cleverly uses to her own advantage.

Turning Hollywood heads

As for the 21-year-old who plays her, the bewitching Emma Stone had only to snag the right lead role to catch Hollywood’s attention after stand-out supporting parts in such humorous fare as Superbad, The House Bunny and Zombieland.

Perfect crimson-coated smile, blue-green saucer eyes, red mermaid hair, slim body and a throaty laugh — little wonder such lad mags as Maxim and FHM put her on hot lists.

Holding court on an outdoor terrace, Stone is like a queen accepting suitors instead of a rising starlet being grilled by the press. Platters of fresh fruit and gourmet cookies come and go, but not before she indulges in each with gusto as she charms her steady stream of visitors.

Turns out Stone’s plane landed at 5 a.m. and she’ll have to take off right after Easy A’s world premiere that night so she can appear on MTV’s Video Music Awards with close friend Taylor Swift the next day. That’ll be followed by Easy A’s L.A. premiere. (Her hard work paid off as the teen comedy held in there against crime drama The Town, coming in at No. 2.)

“I can see how tired I am for sure,” says the actress, waving away remarks to the contrary. But when your dreams are coming true, who needs sleep?

The Scottsdale, Ariz., native knew she wanted to be an actress even as a child. For two years starting in sixth grade, Stone was home-schooled while performing in local productions of Cinderella, The Wizand Alice in Wonderland.

She eventually resorted to a PowerPoint presentation to convince her parents that she should leave high school after one semester as a freshman and head to Los Angeles to pursue an acting career.

What sold them? “A lot of alliteration,” she says. “A pretty interesting wipe (film lingo for a fancy transition from one scene to another). Music.” Specifically, Madonna’s Hollywood. “She does not know that she is indirectly responsible for me being here today.”

A person more directly responsible is Will Gluck, Easy A’s director. Stone was the first hopeful to audition (“I made sure I was,” she says) and nabbed it after taping her own version of Olive’s webcam confessional. “She has the innate ability to play six or seven different emotions all at once — hot, cold, happy, sad, angry, funny, upset,” he said in an earlier phone interview.

Easy A is only the beginning of Stone’s current roll. Coming next spring is Crazy, Stupid Love opposite Steve Carell, Julianne Moore and Ryan Gosling. Down the road is The Croods, a DreamWorks computer-animated caveman comedy.

‘Help’ is on the way

But Stone’s highest-profile project is the drama she is shooting in Greenwood, Miss.: The Help, based on the best seller about black maids in the ’60s as the civil rights movement heats up. She dons a curly blond wig and 3-inch lifts to play Skeeter, the writer who tells the women’s story.

And this Gilda Radner worshiper will get her ultimate wish and host Saturday Night Live on Oct. 23. “Shhh,” Stone says when the subject is brought up. “My eyes are starting to water. I will totally cry.” Asked if that’s because she is happy, Stone enthuses, “Oh, my God, you have no idea.”

So today I went to assist Priscilla Polley at a photo shoot for Entertainment Weekly. The model of the day was the funny and beautiful actress, Emma Stone. I was more than excited to meet her, being a huge fan of her works, including Zombieland, Super Bad, and Ghost of Girlfriends Past. Not only was she as gorgeous in person, but she was quite the comic. She had me cracking up all day. And talk about down to Earth!

Anywho, (I’ll stop being star struck), the clothing we ended up putting on this girl was fantastic, including, a bright orange dress by Stella McCartney (in which she was photographed on the white couch in our lounge). This girl was so chic and uber fun. I had a blast.

The issue of Entertainment Weekly hits stands July 12th!!!!

On just recently piercing her ears: “Most people go through this when they’re like, 14. I’m like, ‘Hey, what’s up everybody? I moved to New York and got fiive piercings!”
On not waffling: “The greatest one [improv skill] that I apply to my life is not waffling. Say you’re on stage with someone and they say, ‘Oh, remember last week when we went to Las Vegas?’ Never say no. Take what they’re saying and go with it. And that’s a good lesson in life.”
On her new flick, Easy A: “The original script was much carzier than it ended up being. The role was a little brasher and darked — usually, in comedy, it’s the riskier the funnier. But I enjoy what the did — it kind of went from R to PG-13. The demographic changed in the process of shooting it.”

Emma Stone, 21, emerged from the Judd Apatow comedy crew, having held her own in Superbad, as Jonah Hill’s way-cool, super-smokin’ home-ec partner, and she struck gold with Zombieland. But her comedy credentials go all the way back to Arizona, where she grew up idolizing Gilda Radner and Molly Shannon and cut her teeth with a local theater troupe. At age 15—after giving her parents a PowerPoint presentation about ditching high school for a career in acting—she left with her mother for Hollywood, where she grew into that alluring raspy voice and the Jessica Rabbit looks.

Great things to come out of last August’s Superbad: the genius comic pairing of Michael Cera and Jonah Hill; the stunning revelation that no one has gotten a hand job in cargo shorts since Nam; and the film debut of Emma Stone. Stone, 19, played saucy, no-bullshit Jules (refresher: the girl who gets a black eye from Hill), a part she earned mostly because she shared Judd Apatow’s dirty sense of humor. “Judd always said he cast girls who actually found dick jokes funny,” she says. This month Stone is back in The Rocker, co-starring Office weirdo Rainn Wilson as a washed-up hair-band drummer on tour with his nephew’s high school rock band. Stone does the cool-chick thing again, playing bass in the band. So, how’s her guitar face? “I like to think I lost myself in the music,” she says. “I’m not quite sure what the look is portraying—but I’m sure it’s up there with the uglier faces of all time.” We doubt it.
