“Easy A” will compete for Outstanding Film in the Wide Release category. This Will Gluck-directed film is up against Lisa Cholodenko’s lesbian family drama “The Kids Are All Right”, Steven Antin’s musical “Burlesque”, Daniel Alfredson’s crime thriller “The Girl Who Played With Fire” and Edgar Wright’s video-game-inspired “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World”.

The GLAAD Media Awards recognizes and honors media, including theater performances, comic books and blogs, for their fair and inclusive representations of the gay community. This year’s ceremony will take place on March 19 in New York; on April 16 in Los Angeles; and on May 14 in San Francisco. Complete list of nominees can be read at GLAAD Media Awards official site.

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced that the summer comedy EASY A, starring Emma Stone, Thomas Hayden Church, Amanda Bynes and Lisa Kudrow, will be coming out right before Christmas on December 21, 2010.

In a weekend stacked with new movies, the bank-robbery action pic “The Town” ran the box office. The film, which took the top spot on Friday, roped in an estimated $23.8 million, a showing that has probably eased the mind of director Ben Affleck, who once told MTV News that he felt “a huge amount of pressure” crafting the flick.

The high-school laugh-getter “Easy A,”, received decent marks from audiences, coming in at #2. The teen-friendly comedy, driven by rising screen star “Emma Stone, who fought through an asthma attack to complete one of the film’s pretend-sex scenes, rang up $18.2 million in ticket sales.

M. Night Shyamalan’s latest project “Devil,” featuring a crew of strangers trapped in an elevator as creepy stuff goes down in the confined space, nabbed the third-place slot. The thriller, which even gets a few screams out of Shyamalan, posted $12.6 million during its debut in theaters.

“Resident Evil: Afterlife,” slipped to fourth place in its second week on screens. Pushed down by three hearty debuts, the zombie-blasting Milla Jovovich-vehicle raked in another $10.1 million. The number brings the film’s total haul to an estimated $44 milllion. In addition to the film’s strong showing, Jovovich recently confirmed that a fifth “Resident Evil” movie is on the way.

The animated cross-country adventure “Alpha and Omega,”, packed with voice-over performances from a diverse cast of stars including Justin Long, Hayden Panettiere, Christina Ricci, Danny Glover and Dennis Hopper, came in fifth place. The story of two wolves (voiced by Long and Panettiere) making their way back home opened with an estimated $9.2 million.

Premiering this weekend is the highly-anticipated “The Easy A,” a John Hughes-type cross of “Juno” and “The Scarlet Letter” starring Emma Stone. It is expected to earn the most money in the box office.

Ben Affleck’s “The Town” also hits theaters this weekend. The Boston-based thriller has earned good buzz and critics are already talking Oscar.

“Devil” is about a group of people trapped in an elevator, with one of them suspected of being the devil himself. M. Night Shyamalan helped write the story and served as a producer. If it doesn’t help restore the filmmaker’s reputation after his string of busts, maybe it will scare people into using the stairs.

“Resident Evil: Afterlife” was the only film to hit nationwide markets last week, in what was the worst box office weekend of the year. “Afterlife” did well making $27 million, on par with previous entries in the film franchise.

Easy A opens in theaters September 17th, 2010.

Emma Stone and Bryce Clyde Jenkins enjoy a breakfast conversation with in this new clip from Easy A.

In the clip below, the duo eat and talk with their on-screen parents, played by Patricia Clarkson and Stanley Tucci, on where Olive was previously and other whether Chip would go through puberty. Then Chip exclaimed he was adopted and dad ran with the joke that it spoiled the surprise.

Easy A, also starring Aly Michalka and Amanda Bynes, is about a high school student who she spread a rumor about her sexuality within the school to advance her social standing, but it later backfired.

The flick hits theaters on Friday, September 17th.

Up-and-coming star Emma Stone gets a lesson in high school popularity in ‘Easy A,’ in theaters Sept. 17.

In the film, loosely based on Nathaniel Hawthorne’s ‘The Scarlett Letter,’ Stone plays Olive, a high school nobody whose status rises when she pretends to lose her virginity to her gay friend. Soon, all of the boys in school need her help, leading everyone to believe she’s way more, uh, experienced than she really is.

The film, directed by Will Gluck (‘Hamlet 2′), is already giving us ‘Mean Girls’ vibes, and could become the next great teen comedy. But will it actually make the grade?

After a very lackluster summer blockbuster season (let’s face it, “Inception” really was no “The Dark Knight”), we’re really looking forward to the fall and winter movies. We have to wait until October for “The Social Network” and November for “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows,” but fortunately we only need to wait until September 17 for the upcoming Emma Stone’s comedy, “Easy A.”

To make waiting time a little easier, here’s an exclusive clip from the film. You just might fall in love with the entire film (and Emma all over again) based on this two-minute sneak, because we most certainly did.

In case you need a refresher on the plot, Emma plays Olive Penderghast (hence the “I love” comment) whose little white lie about how she lost her virginity hit the rumor mill at her high school. Since she’s reading “The Scarlet Letter” in school, she finds her life paralleling Hester Prynne’s, so she sews on that red ‘A’ and embraces her new bad reputation to advance socially and financially.

Emma totally rocks her performance from what we’ve seen in the clip. We already thought she was great from “Superbad” and “Zombieland,” but this is her first chance to fly solo on a project, and she really made “Easy A” her own. That whole conversation at the end between her and her ex-friend, Rhiannon (Aly Michalka), made us laugh out loud.

But fortunately, Emma doesn’t have to do it alone. We saw Stanley Tucci in the clip as Olive’s father, Dill, and found him to be hilarious. He’s a talented actor to begin with, but we love him in comedies. Plus, “Easy A” also stars Cam Gigandet, Amanda Bynes, Penn Badgley, Lisa Kudrow and, yes, Malcom McDowell. Can this film do any wrong?

If you haven’t seen the trailer for the upcoming film ‘Easy A,’ you are missing out. Loosely based on ‘The Scarlet Letter,’ the film is the story of Olive, (Emma Stone) a high school girl who uses a rumor about losing her virginity to change the way she’s perceived. What I’ve seen so far had me laughing my butt off.

The film comes out in September, but Moviefone had a special screening in Beverly Hills on Wednesday night. I got a chance to chat with star Emma Stone and director Will Gluck who were there to introduce the film. Check out what Emma had to say about filming a fake sex scene, and Will’s tips on what classic 80′s film moments to look for. Following in the footsteps of other teen romps based on classic literature (’10 Things I Hate About You,’ ‘She’s The Man’), the movie is based on the story of ‘The Scarlet Letter’ protagonist Hester Prynne, whom Olive is studying in school.

Moviefone and PopEater are teaming up to bring a screening of ‘Easy A’ to lucky fans in the Los Angeles area.

This special screening will be next Wednesday, June 9, at The Grove’s Pacific Theaters in Los Angeles. As an extra bonus, Stone and the film’s director Will Gluck will be on hand to introduce the movie.

Moviefone and PopEater will each select 68 winners and their guests to attend. And you could be among them!

Q: We understand you actually sing in the film.
Emma Stone: I do. I’m already kind of embarrassed enough that I have to parade around in this and dance in front of all of my peers so I was like if we could just not use my voice on playback that would be great. Just to take that concern off of hearing my voice over and over because there’s a reason I’m not recording an album.

Q: When did you first read the script and what was it about the story you really liked?
Stone: I read it almost a year ago way before Screen Gems had gotten it. I fell in love with it pretty much immediately. The way it’s written is just so wonderful and the dialogue is great. It’s very rare to find a comedy that’s really genuinely funny with a character that I would genuinely want to play and spend two months working on. The writer is just so smart and hilarious. It was very natural thing to want to do immediately I think.

Q: Is this close to “Superbad” humor wise?
Stone: I would probably say that the feel of it, this is the most like “Superbad” of any of the movies I’ve done far since “Superbad,” but it’s not comparable at all. It’s an R-rated comedy that has to do with a subject matter that is adult, but dealing with it in high school and so in that way.

Q: What was it about the character that made you want to be Olive?
Stone: When I read it – it was strange. It sounds like a horrible thing to say but I don’t mean it in any egocentric way generally, but when I read it, I was like I can’t really imagine not playing Olive and how sad I would feel if someone else were to play Olive. I fell in love with her.

Q: Did you identify with her a lot?
Stone: Her sense of humor and the way she talks. She can be relatively obnoxious as a girl as I can be much of the time. She’s a good person at heart. I liked her whole reason for doing this was just because she didn’t have anything to lose and why not go with this rumor and see what happens. It ends up not turning out very well at all, but she’s a confident chick. She’s popping out of a wheelbarrow in a Burlesque costume. I admire her strength a lot.

Q: Amanda Bynes’ character really has it out for you. Why?
Stone: She’s a very Christian girl at school who is the head of the cavalcade of crazy girls and boys that believe in purity. I am dressed like this and acting as ridiculous as I can just to shock her really. It’s kinda like the puritans against the liberals and I’m very liberal. I’m not doing any of the things that people are saying I’m doing, but I decide why not just go with it and play with this rumor and it just makes her livid.

Q: Can you talk about working with Penn?
Stone: Oh he’s great. He’s been so much fun. He’s doing a perfect job of Woodchuck Todd because he’s committing to this hardcore. He’s in blue paint and a woodchuck costume. He’s got such a sweetness about him. It’s great.

Q: How do you not get the blue paint on you?
Stone: I don’t know. It’s just not coming off of him. I’m afraid for later when he has to take it off. I don’t know how he’s going to wash it off.

Q: Is today the only day he’s worn it?
Stone: Yeah. I’m sure this has been tested somewhere in a science trial. Amanda did a movie called “Big Fat Liar.” Paul Giamatti is in it. He gets in the shower and they put dye in the shower. Remember he’s dyed blue?

Q: How much rehearsal and practice time went into this scene?
Stone: We did about three dance rehearsals and yesterday we had a solid six hour rehearsal with the pom team and the band and the cheerleaders and kind of rehearsed with them. It’s so funny because the pom team and cheerleaders and everybody are the actual teams from this high school which is actually so cool. They’re great.

Q: How do you feel about today’s costume?
Stone: I feel 100% silly. I’m just trying to act confident. Otherwise I feel rather silly. I kind of like the Moulin Rouge influence.

Q: What was your high school experience like?
Stone: I was only in high school for a couple of months. I went to an all girls Catholic high school and then I decided to leave and move to LA to do this which I can’t believe here I am now. That was 5 ½ years ago.

Q: So can you relate to girls that age with the pressures you’re faced with whether you’re in high school or not?
Stone: Absolutely. I think that’s what I liked about Olive so much to bring it back to that. She rises above it and senses and realizes this is just temporary and this is high school and everyone will forget this and everyone will move on and what can she do to have as much fun to get through it as she can. It kinda bites her in the ass, but it’s also really funny.

Q: That’s so ballsy of her.
Stone: How rare is it that somebody is like, “Oh you’re a slut,” and you’re like, “Okay.” She’s wearing corsets and she really goes for it.

Q: And she does that to go along with the rumors about her?
Stone: Yeah, well the rumor gets a little out of control. She starts making money off it – it’s a whole thing.

Q: Are people starting to believe the rumors because she does go along with it?
Stone: Oh absolutely. Yeah, yeah people definitely believe the rumors. The same amount of people who believe the rumors, there’s an equal amount of people that know this is not true. The people who really know Olive well know this isn’t true, but it’s interesting to see how some of her closest friends react to her in that kind of circumstance. It’s a fun story.

Q: Is this the first time you’ve danced and sang in a movie? I know you played the guitar in “The Rocker.”
Stone: Yeah I sang, but that wasn’t my voice on the soundtrack though. In “House Bunny” I rapped and danced a little bit at the end. This is by far the craziest thing in a movie.

Q: Do you have a background in singing and dancing? Did you go to school?
Stone: I did. I did musical theatre and I took dance lessons for 10 years. I sang for eight years, but that was all a long time ago. I’m so sore right now and I’m so out of shape. It’s just depressing. I’ve been squatting in that wheelbarrow and I’m like, “Ow, ow, ow.” It’s horrible. I used to be able to move.

Q: This movie is on your shoulders basically. Is this the first time?
Stone: Yeah. It’s been wild. It’s been crazy. It feels different than I thought it might. I never thought in a million years that that would ever be the case. It’s wild. This is my third movie in a row so I’ve been working for eight months. It’s kinda natural. It’s just like oh another set and you’re working and you kinda forget that you’re here all day every day. I don’t really think about it like that. I just think about getting my job done. We’ll see how it turns out.

Q: How nervous were you for this scene?
Stone: I haven’t had a minute to think in eight months. It’s been like I knew it was going to happen. It’s been fun because I do have that background in musical theatre and I don’t really get a chance to do this at all. I figure Olive doesn’t have to be that great at it because she’s not a singing / dancing girl. She’s just doing this as a fun cap on this whole rumor she’s starting. I know I don’t have to look incredible and dance incredible. I know that it just has to be a regular girl doing this.

Q: It looks like it would be so much fun.
Stone: Oh it definitely is. You’re dancing around in a boa. I never thought I’d get a chance to do that. It’s not too shabby.

Director Will Gluck explained the plot to ComingSoon.net on the film’s set last summer. “You’ll see [Emma Stone is] reading ‘The Scarlet Letter’ in high school. She stitches an A on her outfit and she kinda owns the whole Scarlet Letter. There is symbolism, but it’s not exactly what Hawthorne used. Since we’re in Ojai [CA] and there’s oranges everywhere there are oranges in almost every scene. Basically when things go bad you’ll see less oranges. When things go well you’ll see more oranges.”

Stone plays a high school student named Olive who is falsely accused of sleeping around. The rumor starts when Amanda Bynes’ character, who is a religious conservativ,e learns Olive isn’t a virgin and dislikes her for not waiting until she is married to have sex. So she begins to tell lies about her to make the school hate her as well. Olive has an interesting approach to the situation and tries to turn the rumor around to her advantage. Instead of denying it, she goes along with it, but her plan backfires.

“The rumor gets spread that she’s having sex for money. It’s a false rumor. If the students pay her enough she’ll have sex. People are paying her just to say she’s had sex with them,” Gluck said. “As soon as she’s had sex, she gets put on a pedestal. So the guys go, ‘hey I want to be on the pedestal,’ so they kinda blackmail her to say she had sex with them. It all spins out of control. So there’s no sex – it’s all about talking about sex,” he continued.

While the film does follow a group of high school students and the pressures they deal with, this movie isn’t just another teen comedy. “It has big issues of sexuality and promiscuity and how you’re perceived, but then it’s not just from the kid’s point of view,” Gluck told us.

“Thomas Hayden Church and Lisa Kudrow’s character–they go through some stuff that’s even tougher than what Emma Stone is going through. Something happens in the movie that takes what Emma is going through and kinda puts in the way backburner of reality. That’s why it becomes a very adult movie very quickly,” he said.

We went to Nordhoff High School in Ojai, California which served as one of the sets for the film and watched two keys scenes in the movie being filmed.

SCENE 1

There’s a pep rally before a big basketball game. We’re in the school gymnasium listening to the band play and watching cheerleaders dance.

Penn Badgley is Todd, the school mascot. He’s painted blue from an earlier scene and is wearing a woodchuck suit. He runs through a banner with a wheelbarrow full of chopped wooden logs that says “Ojai North Rules!”

He then grabs a log and pretends to nibble on it in an attempt to get the crowd riled up. He then jumps up on a spring board and tries to shoot a basketball into the hoop, but falls.

Gluck admits he never experienced pep rallies in high school and turned to movies that inspired him to help get a better idea of them.

“I went to school in NYC. We didn’t have pep rallies and this stuff. All my concept of this kind of stuff is from John Hughes movies,” he said. “I put a huge John Hughes element in this,” he added.

In one take during this scene, while Badgley was running through the banner, he accidentally slipped and fell when he wasn’t supposed to.

Immediately, a group of crew members ran over to make sure he was okay.

The director laughed about the incident.

“I had a heart attack when the crew jumped on him. It was like Jesus Christ fell off the cross. He’s a kid. He’s got padding all over him. He’s 22 years old. He’s fine. He should have jumped up and said “woodchuck.” I guarantee if Malcolm McDowell or someone else would have fallen down, they wouldn’t have cared… He was great. He got right back up.”

SCENE 2

Olive is really going all out to make people believe the rumors about her are true. She surprises the audience at the rally and puts on a show they won’t forget. She’s hiding in the wheelbarrow Todd is pushing through the banner. When he breaks through, she jumps out and is wearing sexy red and black lingerie, black fishnet stockings, heels and a red feather boa.

Although the song playing in the scene wasn’t her, she actually does sing in the film and has an amazing voice.

Olive entices the cheering crowd with her sensual dance moves and powerful voice. She addresses the audience after she performs and says, “This is just a free preview of the show. For the main event, log on to FreeOlive.com at 6PM. I know that interferes with the basketball games, but would you rather be watching the woodchucks or watching me do one?”

The principal (McDowell) runs onto the gym floor after her and he grabs her arm. He angrily said, “That’s enough of that young lady. You’re coming to the office with me right now.”

Olive breaks loose of his grip and said, “I can’t because I have a date with my boyfriend and the rest of the school.” She runs away with Todd out the door screaming, “Go Blue Devils.”

You know those classes everybody wants to take because it’s a snap to get an “A”? Well, movie-making isn’t quite as easy for the young, hot cast of next year’s high school comedy Easy A. TeenHollywood was in Ojai, California a few days ago on set at a real high school where 20-somethings Emma Stone (Superbad, The Rocker), Penn Badgley (“Gossip Girl”) and Amanda Bynes (Hairspray) were going back to high school playing students at a pep rally and working hard, over and over again to get their fun scenes just right.

The film is loosely based on the Hawthorne classic “The Scarlet Letter” but before you run the other way picturing pilgrim types, the only real similarity is the timeless truth that rumors can make or break a person’s reputation. ‘Nuff said. We are honoring the film studio’s wishes that we hold back on all the very, very cool stuff we saw until closer to the film’s release date next year. But, we’ll say that it was very funny and showed that these actors have some talents we’ve not yet seen them explore!

We got to grab some chairs behind the director’s monitors, watch the action both live and on the screen and, in between set-ups, grab some time with Amanda, Penn and Emma! We got some info not related to the film that we can share right now. Check it out!

TeenHollywood: Emma, what was your high school experience like?

Emma: I was only in high school for a couple of months. I went to an all girls Catholic high school and then I decided to leave and move to LA to do this [acting] which I can’t believe here I am now. That was 5 1/2 years ago.

TeenHollywood: So can you relate to teen girls with the pressures they’re faced with whether you’re in high school or not?

Stone: Absolutely. I think that’s what I like about [my character] so much. She rises above it and realizes this is just temporary and this is high school and everyone will forget this and everyone will move on. What can she do but have as much fun to get through it as she can? It kinda bites her in the a**, but it’s also really funny.

TeenHollywood: Your part is pretty central to this film. This movie is on your shoulders basically. Is this the first time?

Emma: Yeah. It’s been wild. It’s been crazy. It feel different than I thought it might. I never thought in a million years that that would ever be the case. It’s wild. This is my third movie in a row so I’ve been working for eight months. It’s kinda natural. It’s just like ‘oh another set’ and you’re working and you kinda forget that you’re here all day every day. I don’t really think about it like that. I just think about getting my job done. We’ll see how it turns out.

We’re going to say that Emma is doing an amazing job in a scene that will showcase talents we’ve not seen her display as yet. We think it will all “turn out” fine! Check back in a few months for more details on Easy A!

Directed by Will Gluck (”Fired Up”) and boasting a script from New York playwright Bert. V. Royal, “Easy A” centers on a high school student who decides being known as a slut is the way to go. She decides to feign being promiscuous, but her life begins to mimic that of Hester Prynne, Hawthorne’s famous “scarlet woman.”

Since Stone will only be pretending to be sleeping around, we’re guessing she won’t be saddled with a baby, but will instead end up ostracized from everyone. She’ll probably even suffer the equivalent of wearing Prynne’s scarlet letter A — a defaced locker.

While you might think it’s cheesy to rewrite Hawthorne for high school, keep in mind that it’s not the first time classic literature has been updated for a teenage comedy. “Clueless” was famously based on Jane Austen’s “Emma”, and did a great job reworking the story into the 1990s. Who knows? “Easy A” may even have more in common with the original book than Demi Moore’s “serious” version did in 1995!
